house table mountain, cape town
alteration + addition
A site within a sensitive historical, urban environment and with a spectacular mountain view, this existing house required an additional floor to accommodate new bedrooms and to ensure that the view was maximised.
The new residence is as much a contemporary town house which responds sensitively to the existing urban pattern, as it is a place for family and social interactions and communing with Table Mountain.
The high ground floor ceilings and pitched roofs open up the interior volumes to the majestic mountain, while still being historically appropriate. The planted roof terrace and "green courtyards" on the sides of the building ensure that the experiences within the house to the outside are changing and delightful, offering different views and lighting while moving through the house during different times of the day. The house is bold and restrained at the same time, in response to the Clients requirements.
